These rings feature an inlay of blue mussel shell personally collected from the rugged coastline of Bar Harbor, Maine. Blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) are marine bivalves that have been part of the coastal ecosystem for millions of years. They thrive in intertidal zones and cold waters. Their subtle violet and blue hues are reminiscent of the sea and the maritime history in the region.

Bar Harbor, located on Mount Desert Island, is located to the northeast of Acadia National Park. This region is known for its dramatic coastal landscapes where the rocky shores meet the Atlantic Ocean. Blue mussels are a vital part of this ecosystem, serving as a food source for seabirds, crabs, and starfish.

Areas near Bar Harbor where blue mussels and their habitats can be observed include:

Hadley Point: Known for its extensive mudflats at low tide, Hadley Point is a prime location for observing blue mussels and other intertidal species.

Bar Island: Accessible at low tide, this area features a variety of marine life, including blue mussel beds.

Otter Point: Located on the southeastern edge of Acadia National Park, this area features rocky cliffs and intertidal zones teeming with marine species, including blue mussels.

These were not collected from living organisms, ensuring no harm was done to the living populations or the surrounding ecosystem.
