Malachite is a vibrant green copper carbonate hydroxide mineral with the chemical formula Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂. Malachite tends to form in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, where it often develops as botryoidal (grape-like) or fibrous masses.
In the United States, notable occurrences of malachite include:
Arizona: The state is renowned for its copper mines, where malachite is commonly found as a secondary mineral.
Utah: The inactive Centennial Eureka Mine in the Tintic Mining District had produced malachite specimens.
Pennsylvania: The active Greenstone Quarry in Adams County has had many malachite specimens identified. It is located approximately 16 miles northeast of Hagerstown, MD.
