This ring features a Triceratops fossil, one of the most iconic dinosaurs from the Late Cretaceous. At first glance, the colors reflect the muted hues of ancient sediment and bone. Look a little closer, and you’re seeing the preserved structure of a creature that lived more than 66 million years ago!
This particular fossil comes from the Hell Creek Formation, a landscape once filled with lush floodplains, towering conifers, and roaming dinosaurs. This Triceratops frill fossil was once made of dense bone that supported the animal’s distinctive headshield. The frill bone transformed through permineralization, a slow process in which mineral-rich water moved through the buried bone, leaving minerals behind. Over millions of years, those minerals filled tiny spaces and hardened, turning the original bone into stone.
